Parent workshops
Kathy conducts a series of parent workshops from time to time each year in particular areas of rural and metropolitan Victoria. If you
are interested in finding out when the next series is commencing and where it is, or if you have a group from your school or preschool
that would like Kathy to run a series for you, please contact Kathy Walker on 03
8802 9352 for further details.
Sessions are tailored to meet the needs and numbers of your group
and are responsive to the particular group attending.
Session 1.The society in which we
parents and our children live
This session provides an overview of all four sessions by mapping out the direction of the sessions and the major topics and issues to
be covered. Participants are encouraged to identify major aims and issues they wish to explore during this first session, which will
then become part of the content throughout the series. The session also explores issues surrounding children and parents in society
today, including the pressures upon parents in a rushed and hurried society and the impact upon children.
Strategies to combat some of the rush and hurry will be explored.
Session 2. Understanding child development. Appropriate expectations of children from birth-5 and
6-12 years
This session provides an overview of some of the major elements of child development, including behaviour, ages, and stages of
development. Aspects of self-esteem, resilience, and personality will be explored.
Strategies for setting realistic expectations of children's
behaviours and actions based upon personality and stage of
development will be explored and developed.
Session 3. Strategies for guiding
children's behaviour. Discipline techniques
This session begins to examine in more detail specific aspects of guiding children's behaviour. It considers some of the major issues
that arise within the family that are challenging for parents or children, and explores ways to work within these.
Specific strategies for adult interactions with children as well as specific guidance techniques will be examined including reflective
listening techniques, setting limits, and consequences.
Session 4. Strategies for guiding
behaviour continued. Final session. Identification of where to next.
This session extends upon the prior session of guidance techniques. It also considers a range of topics as identified throughout the
series of workshops and provides discussion time for participants.
A reflection and action plan exercise completes the series of
workshops with participants identifying where they need to go next
in terms of effective parenting. |
